Counseling for adults in Tigard and King City
Whatever brought you here, you do not have to sort it out on your own. I offer adults a calm, unhurried place to talk, at my office a few minutes from central Tigard or by telehealth anywhere in Oregon.
Susan Robens, Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Oregon. About Susan
- Trained in Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT)
- Certified in Somatic Trauma Therapy

Many people wait a long time before reaching out. Maybe you have been holding things together for everyone else, and there is nothing left over for you. Maybe something happened years ago that still shapes how you feel today. Or maybe life has changed around you, and the old ways of coping no longer fit. You do not need to be in crisis, and you do not need the right words. We can start with what is true for you now.
What adults come to me for
- Anxiety and worry: a mind that will not switch off, panic, or dread that follows you through the day. Anxiety therapy
- Low mood and depression: heaviness, tiredness and losing interest in things you used to enjoy. Depression therapy
- Trauma: recent or long ago, a single event or years of stress. Trauma therapy
- Grief and loss: of a person, a marriage, a home, your health, or the life you expected.
- Life transitions: moving, divorce, a new role, retirement or an empty nest. Life transitions
- Living between cultures: after years abroad, or growing up across countries. Third culture kids and multicultural families
- Parenting stress: when your child is struggling and you are running on empty.
How I work
My approach is integrative, which means I draw on several well-researched methods and fit them to you, rather than fitting you to one method.
- Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps you notice the thought patterns that keep you stuck and find more balanced ways of seeing things.
- Mindfulness helps you slow down, notice what is happening inside you, and respond rather than react.
- Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) is a structured treatment for PTSD that I am trained in. CPT
- Somatic trauma therapy works with how stress and trauma are held in the body. I am certified in Somatic Trauma Therapy. Somatic trauma therapy
- Underneath all of it is the relationship between us. I believe all people are wired for connection, and I put real care into making the room a place where you feel safe, heard and understood.
Later life
Some of the adults I see are in later life. Retirement, the loss of a partner or friends, health changes, moving to a smaller home or further from family can all bring feelings that are hard to share with the people closest to you. Loneliness is common, and it is not a weakness.
For many people at this stage, sitting down together in person matters, so I see older adults in person at my office in King City. Telehealth is there too if getting out is difficult.
I do not take Medicare on its own. Some people with Medicare also have the Oregon Health Plan (OHP), and if you do, I may be able to see you through your OHP plan. Call me and I will check.

Living between cultures
I lived abroad for more than twenty years and raised five children across several countries, so I understand what it means to belong in more than one place, and sometimes in none. If you have moved countries, returned to the United States after years away, or grown up between cultures, you will not have to explain why it still matters. What the first sessions look like
After a free phone consultation, we book a first appointment. In the first session, I ask about your history, what brought you to therapy and what you hope will change, and you can ask me anything about how I work. We agree on a plan together, and we review how things are going as we go. Nothing difficult has to be discussed before you are ready.
In person or telehealth
I see adults in person at my office at 15405 SW 116th Ave, Suite 202A, King City, OR 97224, a few minutes from central Tigard, and close to Tualatin, Sherwood and Lake Oswego. I also offer secure video sessions anywhere in Oregon. Telehealth Office hours: Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday 10am to 6pm; Saturday 10am to 3pm. We find a time that works for you on the phone.
Frequently asked questions
Do you only work with children?
No. About half of the people I see are adults. I work with adults of any age, including in later life, as well as with children, teens and families.
Do I need a diagnosis to start?
No. You can come because something feels hard and you want to talk it through. If you use insurance, your plan requires a diagnosis for billing, and I explain that openly with you at the start.
Is what I share confidential?
Yes, with limited exceptions permitted or required by law, such as a serious risk of harm or suspected abuse of a child or vulnerable adult. I explain these fully at the beginning.
How often will we meet?
Most people come weekly at first, and we adjust as things change. We review progress together regularly.
Can I do sessions online?
Yes, anywhere in Oregon, by secure video. Some people prefer to come in person, and some mix the two.
How do I get started?
Call or send a message for a free phone consultation. I usually reply within 24 hours on weekdays. We talk briefly about what is going on, I answer your questions, and we check your insurance.
